Lucy Bellinger will become the 1499th player to debut for the Brisbane Lions after she was named in Head Coach Craig Starcevich’s 21-women team to take on Collingwood this Saturday afternoon.
Bellinger replaces forward Greta Bodey who is out this week due to an arm injury.
The 26-year-old admitted to feeling “overwhelmed” by Starcevich’s phone call earlier today telling her the good news.
“I’m feeling overwhelmed but really excited about the opportunity,” she said.
“I feel so grateful to be part of this team.”
Bellinger was recruited to the Lions with Pick No. 20 at the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Draft from Glenelg in South Australia.
Starcevich said Bellinger was selected due to her strong performances in recent weeks for the Yeronga Devils in the QAFLW competition.
“Lucy has earned her opportunity off the back of her solid form shown playing in the forward line in the QAFLW,” he said.
“Lucy’s attitude from the time she’s been here has been about improving herself and waiting for her opportunity to come.
“We look forward to seeing what she’ll be bring to the team against the Pies this weekend.”
Bellinger said her parents and sister will fly up from Adelaide for the game.
