After farewelling retired champion Jonathan Brown in style with a stirring upset win over North Melbourne at the Gabba, it didn’t take long for the Brisbane Lions to shift their focus towards Richmond this Saturday.
The Lions have a poor recent history against the Tigers, having beaten them just once in the past decade, while their record at the ‘home of football’ – the MCG – isn’t pretty either.
It looks as though Jack Redden will be forced out of the side that defeated the Kangaroos by four points, with the hard-nosed midfielder contracting a ‘hot spot’ in his foot.
Although the final prognosis is still unknown, it’s expected that the injury will end Redden’s streak of 112 consecutive matches since his debut in 2009.
It was better news, however, for Ryan Lester, who was subbed out of last Saturday’s game with a quad injury.
Thankfully there was no significant damage to Lester’s quad, and he was even able to train with the group on Tuesday.
He will continue to be monitored, but is a chance to line-up against the Tigers at the MCG.
In terms of Redden’s likely replacement, there are a number of candidates pressing for selection.
Experienced midfielder and known clearance-winner Brent Moloney could receive his first senior call-up since the Lions’ last meeting with Richmond in Round 5, while Jack Crisp is also in the frame after a standout performance in the NEAFL last weekend.
Crisp is yet to play a senior game in 2014, but will be in the selectors’ sights after collecting 30-plus disposals and booting three goals in a dominant display against Aspley.
Zac O’Brien, Mitch Golby, Nick Robertson, and Andrew Raines will also come into consideration for that midfield role.
Darcy Gardiner will also be considered for a return down back after being afforded a week’s rest against the Roos.
Gardiner was effectively replaced in last week’s side by fellow draftee Daniel McStay.
Much like dual Club Champion Joel Patfull, both teenage defenders are capable of matching up on different sized opponents – from Jack Riewoldt to Dustin Martin - so present even more versatility down back.
Meanwhile, Jordan Lisle returned to the forward line in the NEAFL last week and booted four goals in a half against the Hornets.
With Brown now retired, Lisle could soon get another chance to prove himself as the Lions’ spearhead in attack.
It’s unlikely to be this week, however, with both Daniel Merrett and Michael Close working well together as the two key forwards against North Melbourne.
Two players who unfortunately won’t be in line for a senior recall this week are Tom Cutler (groin) and Patrick Wearden (quad), who will both miss a month of football through injury.
It’s a particularly big blow for Wearden, who had only just returned from a lengthy stint on the sidelines with a broken ankle.
The Lions’ final Round 16 side will be revealed on lions.com.au at 6:25pm this evening.
