Old dog adds bite to Lions
Ben Hudson proved last Saturday why the Club was so eager to supplement their developing young list with a match-hardened big man over the off-season.
Hudson’s value in the middle was far greater than just his 17 possessions (of which 15 were contested) and 12 hitouts.
The 33 year-old workhorse added a physical presence at stoppages that has been relatively lacking at the Lions since Jamie Charman’s heyday, and proved one of the catalysts in the team’s domination at centre clearances.
Hudson’s value on the field is matched by his value off it - given he’s also fulfilling an important mentoring role for fellow ruckmen Matthew Leuenberger and Billy Longer.
Chatting live online with Lions fans on Wednesday, Hudson said the Club’s exciting young list was one of the main drivers that convinced him to shelve his short-lived retirement plans.
“I think the future of the Lions’ ruck brigade is in great hands,” Hudson said.
“Luey is going to be a superstar! And big Billy Longer has really impressed since arriving at the Club, and don’t be surprised if he gets his chance very soon.”
As for his own role within the team, Hudson said he just wanted to contribute wherever and whenever the team needs.
“I’m just happy to play my role for the time being, so am happy to play as many games as Vossy picks me for!”
He is set to line-up for his second match in Lions colours this Thursday night against Carlton at the Gabba, which he expects will be a tough task - particularly considering the form of their big men Matthew Kreuzer and Shaun Hampson.
“Carlton have a number of players who are in some pretty good form, including both their ruckmen,” he said.
“I think whichever midfield group can take control of the match will go a long way in deciding the outcome of the game.”
