Lions wary, but ready to roar
Michael Voss is wary of Melbourne, but says the Lions will enter the match with confidence
The Lions moved to 5-7 following their 58-point demolition of the Western Bulldogs at the weekend, while Melbourne has won two of its past three matches after Sunday's comfortable victory against GWS.
Voss said the 13th-placed Lions had eroded a number of hoodoos this season, and a win on Sunday would add another.
The Lions won their first match against a top-eight team in two years when they defeated West Coast in round 10, and Saturday's win ended a horror stretch at Etihad Stadium.
However, the improving team from Brisbane is yet to win back-to-back matches this season and Voss said being favourites should be no burden.
"I don't think we should shy away from it," Voss said.
"I think the big thing for us is being able to replicate effort and get consistency of our execution and being meticulous no matter what the opposition's doing to you.
"That's something we haven't demonstrated and something we have to get right no matter what opposition we face every week."
The Lions easily accounted for Melbourne in round one by 41 points, but Voss said the Demons had been impressive in the past month.
Since defeating Essendon in round 10, Melbourne pushed Collingwood for large patches before defeating the Giants at the weekend.
"If you look at Melbourne's form in the past month, they've been right in games," Voss said.
"Their current form suggests they're going OK. We can't be involved in perception about what we think they might look like from six weeks ago.
"It's what they currently look like. And that's for us too ... we have got ourselves into some good form and so have they, in a competitive sense."
Voss said the Lions had been able to absorb pressure better in recent weeks and now had more confidence in each other.
"The guys have been working on their skills and when to go left and when to go right and I saw some instances on the weekend where guys are wanting to use the opposite side of the body and still hitting their targets," he said.
"It's not fluke that that happens. What got us in that position was the way the boys have trained over a long period of time."
Voss said fullback Matt Maguire would have scan results for his injured elbow on Tuesday.
