LAST TIME THEY MET
The Lions met the Demons at the MCG for the 2012 season opener amidst an emotional time for the home side, where 38,373 were in attendance to pay tribute to Melbourne legend Jim Stynes.
It was also Brisbane’s highly-anticipated first meeting with former Lion Mitch Clark, who made the surprise move to Melbourne during 2011 trade week.
Both teams jumped out of the gates early, with a tight contest on display in the first half which saw the Lions take a four-point lead into half time.
The Demons’ momentum stalled, however, in the third quarter and the Lions piled on six goals in a row, followed by another four in the final term to finish the game 41-point victors.
Simon Black was best in the Lions’ midfield, while a surprise move to full-forward for Tom Rockliff saw him kick a career-high three goals. Demons mature-aged recruit James Magner was among the best on ground for the home side in his AFL debut.
FAST FOOTY FACTS
Tom Rockliff amassed 40 disposals in the team’s 58-point win over the Bulldogs on Saturday, making him only the second Lions player post-merger to collect 40 disposals in a game (Luke Power also achieved this in Round 13, 2008).
Simon Black will line up for his 306th game this weekend, which will see him equal Alastair Lynch on the Club’s all-time games played list. Only Kevin Murray (333 games) and Marcus Ashcroft (318) have played more games than Black and Lynch.
After booting three against the Bulldogs, Daniel Merrett is now the Club’s leading goalkicker with a total of 20 this season.
Mitch Clark joined the Demons via 2011 Trade Week after 82 games in six seasons with the Lions.
Assistant Coach Jade Rawlings also signed with Melbourne at the end of the 2011 season following two years as the Lions’ defensive coach.
