THE BRISBANE Lions are going out of their way to ensure Gold Coast has no ammunition ahead of Saturday night's QClash at the Gabba, claiming the game is just like any other.

At Wednesday's main training session, ruckman Matthew Leuenberger and small forward Todd Banfield both played straighter bats than Bill Lawry to the new ball when questioned on the match.

It came on the back of coach Michael Voss' comments yesterday that while it was a unique game it was not the club's grand final.

In the build-up to the teams' first match-up on May 7, Simon Black stoked the fire by calling his former teammate Jared Brennan "a mercenary" for switching to the Suns.

Brennan went out and duly won the Marcus Ashcroft Medal for best on ground with a sensational 30-disposal display.

It seems the Lions will not be making the same mistake twice.
"For us it's going to be like any other game," Leuenberger said.

"We haven't had many wins this year so it's not really any different - we just need to go in there and get the win. That's what we're focusing on."

The giant ruckman - ranked second in the league in hit-outs - softened a touch when admitting it would be "sweet" to win after the eight-point loss earlier in the season.

"We're not approaching this week looking for revenge or anything like that. It's very much a focus just to go out there and win, which is something we haven't done this year," he said.

"It doesn't matter who we're playing. [The loss] stings because inevitably you want to win the first QClash, which we didn't. It'd make it even, but we haven't had many wins this year and any win, whether it's QClash or Adelaide, it's not really any different."

With a run home that has the Lions facing Collingwood, West Coast and Sydney Swans after the Suns match, this looks their best chance to win and escape the wooden-spoon race.

Leuenberger said the major lesson from the earlier loss was the Suns' expertise around the stoppages.

"Their major strength is their clearance players; they're a really good stoppage side," he said.

"Players like Rischitelli and Ablett and Brennan and those types, even the youngsters like Swallow, they're real quality players so I think if we can get on top in that area of the ground it will help us get a win."

Banfield said the Lions were more concerned with their own game than worrying about the Suns.

"There's definitely a bit of pride on the line. The main focus for us is to play our football and focus on what we do well," he said.

"They got the first one against us and it's always good to get the four points against them, but it's just a normal game and we're going to play our kind of football."
