Justin Leppitsch seems to have settled well into the top job since being appointed as Brisbane Lions Senior Coach just four months ago.
The seamless transition is testament not only to Leppitsch’s capabilities in the role, but also the extended coaching panel that surrounds and supports him.
New Head of Coaching and Development Peter Schwab, in particular, has proven a valuable addition to the off-field staff, as he brings with him a wealth of experience at AFL level.
After spending five seasons as Senior Coach at Hawthorn from 2000-2004, Schwab filled a variety of senior roles with the AFL.
Now, for the first time in 10 years, he is thrilled to be back working at ‘club-land’.
“I’m delighted with the opportunity. I’ve always been keen to get back involved,” Schwab recently told 3AW radio in Melbourne.
Schwab has developed a good relationship with Leppitsch after only a short period of time, and said he’s happy to be a sounding board for the first-time coach as required.
“If he feels the need to seek advice on certain situations, he’ll ask what my view is. I’m really there for advice,” Schwab said.
“It’s worked really well. I’ll certainly speak my mind. The best part about it is that he asks when he needs to ask and I’m there to do what I can to make sure he has a long and successful career here.”
Before he officially joined the Lions, Schwab formed part of the coaching selection panel that helped appoint Leppitsch.
“We hadn’t (had much to with each other previously). It all came about because of my association with Leigh (Matthews) and I’m close friends with Dean Warren, and I helped the Club with their coaching search,” he said.
“That was my only real contact with Justin. He was very impressive throughout the interview process.
“The first thing that struck me was that he’s got a clear idea of what he wants to do. He’s got a new game plan, he’s organised, is a terrific communicator, and has already built great relationships within the football club. I think he’ll be an outstanding coach.”
