THE BIG impact of the Brisbane Lions draft class should surprise no one, says experienced ruckman Trent West.
While some older heads stepped up against St Kilda on Friday night to help get the Lions their first win of the season, again it was the kids who impressed.
After the exodus of five players under the age of 21 at the end of last season, the Lions were under pressure to produce some talent with their six picks inside the top 34 of the NAB AFL Draft.
Early indications are they have delivered.
James Aish, the No.7 pick, played undoubtedly his best game, racking up 25 disposals (12 contested), eight marks and a goal.
Nick Robertson (No.34) was a midfield terrier in just his third match, quietening Jack Steven in a first-half tagging role and finished with 18 touches of his own.
Livewire Lewis Taylor (No.28) kicked two goals, Darcy Gardiner (No.22) was solid in defence, and Tom Cutler (No.33) played as a substitute a week after racking up 21 largely composed disposals against Richmond.
Not only has the draft class been given games, they have been among the Lions' best.
"They've been really good, Aishy, Robbo, Cuts, Diz (Gardiner) - those boys have been great," West said.
"They've come in, played a role and had a great impact on the game, which is all you can ask from them.
"I guess for some it might be a surprise, but the club drafted really well.
"Those guys are really determined and just want to win that hard ball and they just thrive to win the contest, which is great."
West says the younger players particularly will benefit greatly from a win, and could carry the momentum into hosting the Sydney Swans on Saturday night.
"They're a pretty respected team throughout the competition and we'll have to be on our toes. I don't think they've dropped their guard at all," West said.
