The Brisbane Lions Reserves responded in devastating fashion to their 54-point loss to Sydney in their NEAFL season opener at the Gabba, by claiming an 89-point victory over the Gold Coast Reserves in the curtain raiser at Metricon Stadium last Saturday.
The Lions booted 5-5-4-6 goals across the four quarters to extend their lead at each of the breaks before running out comfortable winners – 20.19 (139) to 7.8 (50).
Development Coach Mitch Hahn said the 143-point turnaround from Round One to Round Two was credit to the players’ commitment to the team structure.
“A lot can happen in a week of footy, there’s no doubt about that,” Hahn told lions.com.au.
“The players were given a pretty simple message from (Innovation & Developmet Manager) Gary O’Donnell, and they really took it on board.
“The game was played in extremely hot conditions with a 12pm start, so there were some tough moments. But they really stuck it out and listened to their instructions.
While the four points helped lift the Lions to 7th on the NEAFL ladder after two games, Hahn said the result was secondary to seeing the improvement in the younger players.
“This season is all about gradual improvement, and we began to see that across our young NEAFL players on the weekend,” Hahn said.
“We got to see some real improvement in areas, which is far more encouraging than just the win itself.”
Please find below Mitch Han’s appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against the Suns last Sunday.
Ryan Harwood | He was a carry-over player as the senior team’s emergency, so only played the first half. However, his energy was high early on, and he provided us with good offensive run from backline. |
Jack Crisp | Crispy had unusual start to game with his car breaking down on his way to the game – so he probably had other things on his mind. But he ended up with 24 possessions in midfield, 11 of which were contested, and had five inside 50s. It was a good response from him. |
Rohan Bewick | Ro looked dangerous and lively up forward, and even took a spectacular mark. He finished with three goals, but probably could have ended up with six. He needs to continue making the most of his opportunities in front of goal. |
Nick Robertson | Robbo was terrific. Had the job on Karmichael Hunt and they had a tough battle for the first half. But Nick blitzed him after half-time and finished with 30 possessions and nine clearances. His spirit and enthusiasm was just terrific all day. |
Daniel McStay | Dan had a bit of a breakout game and showed real improvement from week before. He stood up with his body positioning and also provided great run. Finished with 23 disposals, 10 handball receives and five spoils. |
Tom Cutler | Tom has been playing predominantly down back this year, but was moved onto the wing for this game. He showed some real class and outside run, and also a good change of speed. Had 29 possessions and 10 marks, as well as six inside 50s and four rebound 50s – which shows that he was running hard both ways. |
Darcy Gardiner | He was terrific again, and really puts his body on the line for the team. We’re still working on his offensive run, but he managed 16 possessions which was pleasing. He’s a real lock-down defender, and his opponents didn’t do much all day. |
Andrew Raines | Rainsey went about his business in the midfield with 25 possessions and five clearances. He continued to provide good run, but just needs to work on taking on the tackler. He provides good leadership for the younger guys. |
James Polkinghorne | Polks played his first game back from a knee injury, so our expectations were just to get him back enjoying the game after a pretty frustrating pre-season. He showed some real signs with 21 possessions in limited game time. He just has to make the most of his opportunities, and concentrate on doing the simple things brilliantly. |
Jonathan Freeman | Jonno showed some real glimpses up forward, even though he didn’t kick a goal. He had 14 possession – including 11 contested which is terrific for a big guy. It’s great to see him going for those second and third efforts. We just want to see him keep launching for the ball in the air, because that’s when he looks most dangerous. |
Matt Maguire | He played up forward mostly and booted three goals. He didn’t have a huge amount of possessions, but showed great leadership and direction for the younger guys out on the field. He knows where his footy’s at and what he needs to do to get back in the senior team. |
Jackson Paine | Jackson looked dangerous all day and finished with five goals and three behinds. He probably should have had kicked than five, so needs to work on his conversion. He also had 16 possessions and eight marks, and worked hard inside the forward 50m arc. If he continues to play the way he has been, you wouldn’t think it will be long before he gets another chance at AFL level. |
Isaac Conway | Izzy has been played mostly in the midfield, but we took the opportunity to shift him down back to play on the Suns’ smaller forwards. He did a good job defensively and really worked hard on his defensive coverage and making sure that his opponents weren’t getting shots on goal. A solid four-quarter effort. |
Nick Hayes | He was classy inside and does the smart things really well. He uses the ball really well when he gets it and had 10 handball receives. He just needs to make sure he can run out the game strongly. |
Archie Smith | At the moment, every game is a learning experience with Archie. He had 21 hitouts and seven possessions, and it was pleasing to see him once again shoulder the ruck duties and owning that position. He’s showing some great improvement at the moment, but will still take some time. |
Jordon Bourke | Jordon started pretty slowly, but finished off the second half strongly. He had 18 possessions, but the highlight of his game was his intercept marking and finding the right defensive positions. |
Zac O’Brien | Zac’s a really hard-working midfielder who finds plenty of the ball. He had 27 possessions (11 contested) and seven clearances. He does his best work in-and-under and always runs hard and does the team things. We just have to make sure that he finishes off his hard work with clean disposal. Hopefully he’ll get an opportunity at some stage to play senior football. |
