Around 800 Victorian-based Brisbane Lions fans packed out the Club’s official aftermatch function at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to pay tribute to retired champion Jonathan Brown.
It was shoulder-to-shoulder in The Victory Room post-game, with supporters prepared to brave the claustrophobic conditions for their chance to officially farewell the inspirational centre half-forward at his first public appearance in Victoria since announcing his retirement in June.
After a brief wait, Brown appeared to rapturous applause, and was overwhelmed by the deafening and persistent “Brrrooooowwwwnnnyyyyy” chants that followed his arrival.
A proud country Victorian and former Fitzroy supporter himself, Brown spoke about how much he appreciated the support from the Victorian faithful, before being swamped for signatures.
The Club would like to thank all Lions supporters who made the effort to attend the aftermatch function and make it such a memorable occasion.
Although the sheer weight of numbers made it impossible for Brown to get around and see everyone, he was thrilled and humbled by the reception.
Earlier, Brown addressed the Etihad Stadium crowd during an on-field interview before the Lions’ match against Melbourne, and marvelled at the cheer squad’s tribute that appeared on the team’s banner.
All in all, it was a wonderful – albeit sometimes chaotic – farewell for one of the Club’s favourite sons.
