Tom Rockliff has vowed to clean up his act to ensure that he doesn’t miss any further matches due to minor indiscretions – but that won’t stop him from doing everything he can (legally) to get under the opposition’s skin.
Rockliff’s passion for his beloved Brisbane Lions is undisputed, and thrives on flying the flag for his team.
However, the 24-year-old’s in-your-face style of play has gotten him in hot water at times this season.
In fact, Rockliff has been suspended by the AFL Match Review Panel twice already in 2014 for minor off-the-ball incidents.
The Lions were left ruing his absence in both Round 2 and Round 17, with tight losses to Geelong and West Coast respectively.
“You don’t want to give the match review panel a chance to rub you out and it’s absolutely fair, Leppa (coach Justin Leppitsch) has told me that,” Rockliff told The Courier Mail.
“I don’t think my (actions resulting in) suspensions were that bad. It wasn’t as if I belted someone in the face, sort of thing, but I put myself at risk — I deserved both the suspensions.
“I have to adapt what I do because it only hurts the team if I am not out there.”
“There are ways to do things differently and get under the skin of the opposition in different ways than the two indiscretions I’ve had.
“It’s probably got me in a little strife this year too. I have to look to curb that but I enjoy it.”
Rockliff will return to the Lions’ senior team for this Saturday night’s QClash against Gold Coast at the Gabba – a match he says will hold much more importance than the AFL ladder might suggest.
“It’s important to grow Queensland footy and we want to be the No.1 team in Queensland,” Rockliff said.
“We don’t want them to be in the finals.”
