Ryan Harwood

He played across half back, and was influential with his run and drive. We threw him in middle for last 10-15 minutes when the game was there to be won, and he kicked the goal that got us back within a couple of points. Played an important leadership role.

Jack Crisp

Jack was on-ball for the majority of the match. It was a midfielder’s game, and he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. Spent time opposed to some good opposition in Tom Mitchell and Ryan O’Keefe, which will be a great learning experience for him.

Rohan Bewick

I thought Friday was one of Rohan’s best NEAFL games. He showed his terrific running ability on the wing, and really ran hard and gave us good drive early in the game.

Jordan Lisle

Jordy played across half-back and was a real general in defence. Along with ‘Goose; Maguire, really helped set up everyone around him and controlled things down back. Showed good composure when he had the ball.

Daniel McStay

It was another good opportunity for Daniel to play against AFL-listed opposition, and he keeps learning every week. His drive off half-back was important and he took a few intercept marks as well, which is something he’s been working on. He’s building week by week.

Michael Close

It wasn’t ideal conditions for big forwards, so Closey probably didn’t have the influence as he did the week before. But what’s really pleasing is that he continues to work hard and gets to stoppage after stoppage. He had a couple of shots on goal, but didn’t convert. Still a very serviceable performance.

Jonathan Freeman

Jono was a bit quiet in first quarter and a half, and found it difficult to get into the game – particularly as there wasn’t a lot of clean ball going into the forward line. But after that, he started taking some good marks and had a couple of shots on goal. But he only managed a few behinds, so really needs to take those opportunities when they present themselves.

Matt Maguire

Given we have a few tall forwards back in the side, Goose has returned to the backline over the past couple of weeks – and his leadership and experience has been really important. He’s rarely beaten one-on-one, and sets the tone for the younger players. There was one instance where he went back with the flight and split his head open. It’s that sort of courage that helps lift a team.

Jackson Paine

Jackson was probably our most productive forward. He kicked 2.3 – but, like a lot of our forwards, could have had a better day had he kicked straighter. He continually worked hard, even though the conditions weren’t favourable to his type of game.

Isaac Conway

It was one of Isaac’s better games for the season. Maybe the conditions suited him, but he played a bit on the wing and in the midfield, and was able to get his hands on the ball a bit more. There are still areas he needs to work through, but it was an improved game.

Mitch Golby

Golbs is one of the young leaders at our Club and really helped lead the way for the boys in Mackay. He played mainly on the ball, and a bit across half-forward, and never stopped running or trying. Spent time on Tom Mitchell and Ryan O’Keefe as well, and was a valuable senior body.

Nick Hayes

Nick didn’t get ridiculous amounts of the footy, but when he did, he was usually clean. He played more forward than he did on-ball, and really set us up when he had the ball in his hands. He also had a really good contested ball moment, which is one of the better things I’ve seen from him at this level. He essentially crashed in at the contest and won the ball. It’s a good sign for him, as that’s an area of his game that he’s been working hard on. He’s also been tackling well – in fact, he might even be our leading tackler this year.

Archie Smith

Archie didn’t have a great night before the game – he was awake for most of it with a sore tooth. Although the conditions made it hard, he just keeps improving. If anything, the wet weather helped create plenty of stoppages, and he was able to hold his own against Nankervis in the ruck and give our boys first use.

Jordon Bourke

One thing Jordon needs to work on in his consistency of effort across four quarters. He can be very good at times, but then have lapses here and there. He’s part of that young defensive group that’s being driven by Goose. On the weekend he got to play against some good AFL opposition, which is great for his development.

Sam Michael

Sam played forward and helped out in the ruck. Like the other big forwards, the conditions weren’t favourable for him, and he wasn’t able to make the most of his running ability. He gave us a presence, but didn’t have a huge impact. That said, one thing with Sam is that we’re certainly a better team when he plays.

Zac O’Brien

Zac was given the responsibility for looking after some of the Swans’ midfield group. He probably broke even with Tom Mitchell in the first half – which is a great effort – and then nullified Daniel Robinson after half time. He’s ability to stick to the task has been pleasing. He’s been able to find plenty of the ball and work off his opponent.
