The Brisbane Lions are moving quickly and thoroughly to determine and eliminate any possible in-house causes behind two serious post-operative infections suffered by ruckman Matthew Leuenberger and Development Coach Craig Brittain within the last three months.

Lions Chief Executive Michael Bowers has established an investigation team and is receiving professional support from St Andrews Hospital (where the player and coach were treated), Queensland Health and Stadiums Queensland to identify and remove any contributors or risk factors from the Gabba's Football Department rooms.

"One serious post-op infection is very unlucky - twice demands a full inquiry - as the health and well-being of our players and staff is the number one priority here at our Club," Mr Bowers said.

"As a matter of urgency we are moving as many pieces of information as we can from the 'unknown category' into the 'known category' so we can respond effectively."

The Lions will conduct this physical examination and sampling followed by a Queensland Health recommended treatment of the players rooms this week, with both the seniors playing away in Adelaide and the reserves playing away in Darwin this weekend.

The reserves fly out Thursday morning while the seniors fly out Friday morning leaving a fully vacant environment for probes, medical tests and swabs, intensive cleaning and chemical treatments.

"The Club is in daily contact and visiting Craig Brittain in hospital and we certainly all wish him a full and speedy recovery as we did with Matthew Leuenberger."

The Club will make no further comment at this stage.
