Simon Black will certainly remember his 320th AFL match more fondly than his record-breaking 319th AFL match in Perth.
Black officially overtook Marcus Ashcroft’s previous Brisbane games record of 318 games against Fremantle in Round 12, but the occasion was soured by a 40-point loss to the Dockers.
To compound matters, the three-time Club Champion was subbed out of the match during the third quarter after feeling unwell.
Last Sunday, Black had the opportunity to celebrate the milestone for the first time in front of his home-town fans at the Gabba.
And what a celebration it ended up being, with the Lions coming from 52 points behind against second-placed Geelong to secure a famous five-point victory.
Black led the charge with a team-high 33 disposals for the match, 12 of which came during the final term assault.
It was a win the 2002 Brownlow Medallist ranked among the most memorable of his career.
“That was right up there with any win I’ve been involved with,” Black told LIONS TV after the match.
“Once you take the Grand Finals out, that’s probably as good a win (as I’ve experienced). 52 points down, it was just super special and I’ll never forget it.
“It was one of the best feelings I’ve had in footy. Just incredible.”
The evening was made even more special with the Lions commemorating Black’s achievement by wearing a limited edition ‘Black Label’ Guernsey during the warm-up.
The Gabba also featured a ‘Black Bay’ for the first time, containing fans who had worn black in honour of the Club’s most decorated player.
Black made a particular effort to show his appreciation to the fans who decked out in black after the game.
“I looked around the stadium and there were a lot of people in black, and it was really cool to run around, give them a clap and thank them for doing that,” Black said.
“I went over to the ‘Black Bay’ and gave them the thumbs up. It was really humbling and really special. I won’t forget it.”
