The Lions newly appointed Football Director, Leigh Matthews, has issued the following call to arms:

The members desire for leadership change at the Brisbane Lions was the catalyst for an eventual reconstituted board under the new Chairmanship of Bob Sharpless. A fresh start revival has begun, but the challenge to reduce a large debt and to become financially self-sufficient will require the support of everybody with a Lions interest at heart.

Our current financial position is not comfortable reading. Details for the past year’s performance will be released by the Club on November 25 and debt levels are far higher than we would like.

The current support from the AFL will only allow us to survive when we clearly want to thrive and excel.

With that simple objective I urge and encourage all existing members to not only renew but to recruit ONE extra member as well.

Growing our membership back up to its historic level around 30,000 can be done. This would be of enormous value to the club’s financial position to fund a strong football operation and team.

We go forward into 2014 with great hope. We have an exciting and improving player group, a new coach, a new Chairman and a new Director of Football. We believe and belong. We would love for our supporters to all become members and to join us on the Lions' fresh start revival.

Leigh Matthews
