The strong form of the youth brigade led by Eric Hipwood, Rhys Mathieson and Jarrad Jansen provided a silver lining to another loss for the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.
Hyundai Help For Kids Lions Academy product Eric Hipwood showed plenty in just his second AFL game, kicking three goals and two behinds.
Mathieson had 24 disposals including 14 contested possessions, and seven tackles, while 13 of Jansen's 16 possessions were contested in addition to six clearances and a goal.
Coming off a new three-year deal announced on Thursday, Sam Mayes had 27 disposals and eight rebound 50s.
Lewis Taylor kicked 2 goals while Dan McStay, Josh Schache and Harris Andrews (a game-high eight 1%ers) all played their part.
Debutant Matthew Hammelmann had 10 touches and five marks in his debut.
