What is it with Simon Black milestones and Collingwood?

The two seem to have been synonymous with each other for the better part of 16 seasons.

Black’s 100th AFL game was played on that memorable last Saturday in September back in 2002, just five days after he had won the Brownlow Medal.

His 200th was also against Collingwood in Round 9 of 2007 – as was his 250th in Round 18 of 2009.

Now Black is set to equal Marcus Ashcroft’s Brisbane games record this Friday night at the Gabba against, you guessed it, Collingwood.

The three-time Club Champion will line-up for his 318th senior AFL match with the Club – the equal most played in Brisbane history.

Fitzroy Legend Kevin Murray still holds the all-time combined Club games record with 333 matches.

Black said it was a huge honour to be sitting alongside Ashcroft, who was inducted into the Lions Hall of Fame last year.

“I always looked up to Marcus as a young player when I arrived at the Club. He was so professional, diligent and durable,” Black told Dom Fay and Michael Whiting during the Round 10 Fancast on LIONS TV.

“It’s sort of strange to think that I will have played as many games as he got to. He’s a great friend and I was able to play in those three premierships with him as well.”

Black will be one of only a few senior Lions players available to play this Friday, with the likes of Jonathan Brown, Daniel Merrett, Daniel Rich, Tom Rockliff, Matthew Leuenberger and Matt Maguire sidelined.

He said the loss of such key players will make for a tough, but not insurmountable, challenge.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge no doubt. It’s one of those great challenges you’d love to get up for against Collingwood,” he said.
