Even before he was officially appointed as Co-Captain on the eve of the 2013 season alongside Jonathan Brown, he had long been a prominent voice both on and off the field.
Adcock shouldered much of the leadership responsibility at the Lions last year, which led him to being selected as sole skipper in 2014, with Brown relinquishing the title.
Although his role will remain largely the same, being appointed sole Captain sees the recently inducted Life Member join elite company.
Adcock becomes just the third sole Captain in the Lions’ merged history, behind Michael Voss and Brown.
While there have been other Captains during this time – namely Nigel Lappin, Simon Black, Luke Power and Chris Johnson – their time at the helm was shared. Voss and Brown also began as Co-Captains before eventually going it alone.
If you take a look back since the inception of the Bears, there have only been four sole Brisbane skippers – Mark Mickan, Roger Merrett, Voss and Brown – over the past 27 years.
You can now make that five.
Interestingly, the Club’s three last serving sole skippers – Merrett, Voss and Brown – are among the four longest serving in the Lions’ combined history, with Fitzroy Legend Kevin Murray the only exception.
Had Brown continued on for an eight year as Captain, he would have joined Murray as the equal second longest serving skipper of all time.
Voss’ decade as Captain from 1997-2006 remains the Club record.
Unless Adcock can stay on as Captain until 2020, it’s unlikely he’ll enjoy the same longevity in the role as the aforementioned stars.
However, he’s still part of an exclusive group of players, with the honour of being Captain only bestowed upon 53 players throughout the Club’s combined 127-year VFL/AFL history.
