Brisbane v Port Adelaide on Saturday night was billed as the match of the round and for the opening quarter it looked like being a close one.

But a stunning second quarter by the Lions blew the Power out of the contest.

In this week’s coach’s wrap strategy coach Danny Daly says the Lions ability to get on top of the contested ball after the first break swung the game in their favour.

With control of the ball allowing them to dominate the territory battle the Lions were able to create too many scoring opportunities for Port to contend with as they cruised to a 37 point victory.

“We were obviously very pleased with the result at the end of the day’’ he said.

“Port Adelaide got hold of us early in the first quarter and we probably could have been a couple of goals down so luckily enough we went in at quarter time still in front.

“We just had to address a couple of issues, our contested ball and our stoppage situation which Port Adelaide were in charge of.

“But in the second quarter we won territory through our stoppages and centre-bounces especially and we were able to put their defenders under pressure and more importantly hit the scoreboard when we went inside fifty.

“So that burst of ten or fifteen minutes really set the game up for us and we were able to ride it out from there.’’

Saturday to Thursday is a short turnaround and when you have to factor in the logistics of moving a playing list of 27 plus ** staff members for an extended stay in a NSW hub, the lead-up to the Geelong game looks very different from the standard in-season routine.

Daly said the coaches addressed the players about the Port win late on Saturday night directly after the game and quickly moved onto preparing for the Cats.

There will only be the opportunity for a light “captain’s run this week before heading to Sydney.

He said once the clash with the Cats was over more planning would be put into how life in the hub would be managed.

“We reviewed the game with the players straight after the game which was something a bit different for us,’’ he said.

“We train Wednesday morning then we’ve got a 3pm flight down to Sydney.

“We’ll get there Wednesday night and do our normal prep for a game that we do interstate, play Thursday against the Cats at the SCG which is something different and from there once the game is finished we can really address what it looks like for however long we are there for.

“But for now until Thursday it is business as usual.’’
