At the start of the NAB AFL Trade Period, General Manager of Football David Noble said that the Trade and Draft period was all about talent and strategy.
It was about maximising early picks for the upcoming draft, and the Lions certainly did that - now in possession of picks 3, 16, 21, 22, 76, 78 and 96.
Speaking to lions.com.au after today's Trade Period cut-off, Noble said that the Lions had executed the first part of their strategy.
"I think we executed our strategy really well," Noble said.
"I think we’re pleased with where we’ve gotten to... and where we’ve positioned ourselves as part of the first part of our strategy.
"The next part of our strategy will be going to the draft and executing that around talent."
Below are the trades the Brisbane Lions made:
Trade one: More first round picks
The Lions continued to build an arsenal of early Draft picks after completing a deal to receive picks No.3 and 16 from Greater Western Sydney in exchange for pick No. 2, 31, 51 and 60.
Brisbane Lions National Talent Manager Peter Schwab said the trade was in line with the Club’s strategic priorities across the Trade & Draft Period.
“We want to add talent to our list and build a team that can win our next Premiership,” said Schwab.
“It’s important for our fans to realise that our strategy is very much based on the result of Trade and Draft Periods combined."
Trade two: Hanley trade finalised
On Tuesday the Brisbane Lions confirmed that a three-way trade had been done with the Gold Coast SUNS and Port Adelaide which sees Pearce Hanley and draft pick no.19 exchanged for a future first-round draft pick and this year’s pick no. 22.
This trade meant that the Brisbane Lions were in possession of four picks within the top 22, holding picks 3, 16, 21 and 22.
How the three-way trade worked:
- The Gold Coast SUNS pick up Hanley and receive selection 67 from Port Adelaide
- The Brisbane Lions gain the SUNS’ second round selection (pick 22) and also secure Port Adelaide’s future first round selection in 2017
- The Power acquire the Lions’ first round priority selection (19) and the SUNS’ 30th overall selection
Trade three: Frost becomes a Lion
Our final trade for the 2016 NAB AFL Trade Period allowed us to secure defender Jack Frost from Collingwood.
The Lions received Frost, this year's pick no. 76 and a future third round pick, while Colingwood received our future third and fourth round picks.
List Manager Peter Schwab said that he was pleased to get the deal done, which will see Frost sign for three years.
“With Jack, all year we’ve been tracking key defenders,” said Schwab.
“At 24, even though he’s only had a little experience (54 games) he’s still got plenty of football ahead of him.
“He’s got great speed and is a good character, he’s a perfect fit.”
In other news from the trade period, the Club was also able to lock in young guns Archie Smith and Darcy Gardiner who both recommitted to the Club.
It was also announced on Wednesday that Tom Rockliff will remain a Lion in 2017.
