Senior Coach Michael Voss has said that his side must improve their clearance work if they are a chance of beating finals-bound West Coast twice this year.

Speaking exclusively to LionsTV, Voss said that the battle against the Eagles would be won at the stoppages - an area the Lions were lacking in against the Gold Coast last weekend.

“The Gold Coast certainly got on top of us a hell of a lot, and we just lacked that movement and that impact that we need around that part of the ground,” Voss said.

Incidentally, Eagles coach John Worsfold has a similar issue to address with his players this week following their loss to Adelaide - something that is not lost on Voss.

“I felt like John Worsfold was almost echoing what I was prepared to say around stoppages so that’ll be an interesting battle in and around the contest.”

“They’ve got two important ruckmen and if there was an area of the game on the weekend that was fairly disappointing, it was our clearance work, so that’s something that we do have to fix up for sure if we’re a chance against West Coast.”

Voss also said that former Fremantle coach, and now Lions Assistant Coach, Mark Harvey, would be an asset when it came to tackling one of the most feared grounds in the AFL - Patersons Stadium.

“[Harvey] knows the ground almost inside out, so that’s going to help us in how we set up the ground and how we operate the ground,” Voss said.

“He has also coached against West Coast, who have been a huge rival of Freo’s for such a long time - so we’ve got that little bit of intelligence that’s on our side, and hopefully we can put it to some use.”
