10-year-old Shericka Mahoney has gone one step further in letting everyone know she is a Brisbane Lions superfan.
With her jeans rolled up and a huge smile from ear to ear, Shericka proudly paraded a maroon and gold Brisbane Lions prosthetic leg around the Gabba.
After losing her leg at just six months old, for the last seven years Shericka has had an array of different patterns and colours on her prosthetic but she says the Brisbane Lions design is her new favourite.
Shericka’s new leg resembles her very first Lions guernsey, with Roy, sponsors and the AFL logo featured.
As Shericka is a young, growing girl she requires a new leg each year to fit properly and comfortably She makes the journey down to Brisbane from her community, which is west of Mt Isa.
Shericka’s grandmother, Pam Corbett, says she looks forward to their frequent trips to Brisbane as she loves looking at all the Brisbane Lions billboards and watching the games at the hospital.
“We’ve been coming to Brisbane hospitals, like Lady Cilento and the Mater Hospital, so she decided to be a Brisbane fan,” Pam said.
After nine years of traveling to Brisbane it has always been a dream for Shericka to meet all her favourite Lions players.
Today that dream became a reality.
Invited to the Lions’ Tuesday training session, Shericka met her favourite player Charlie Cameron, who presented her with a 2019 Indigenous guernsey and she even scored one of Luke Hodge’s boots.
Charlie and Shericka shared a special bond, with the superstar forward also growing up in Mt Isa.
Pam admits that today’s experience meant so much to Shericka, saying that she has made memories today that will last a lifetime.
Shericka flies home later this week and is eager to show off her new shiny Lions leg to all her friends.
“She is very excited because back home in the Northern Territory all that is played is AFL,” Pam said.
