Former Brisbane Lions great Luke Power announced his retirement from AFL football on Tuesday after a highly decorated 302-game career.

Power, who enjoyed a glittering 282-game career with the Lions from 1998-2011, played a further 20 games for GWS in 2012 and was one of the Giants' inaugural Captains along with Callan Ward and Phil Davis.

He played his 300th AFL match late in the 2012 - adding to his long list of achievements which is headlined by three Premierships with the Lions (in 2001, 2002 and 2003).

Power finished in the top five of the Lions' best and fairest a staggering eight times, and is ranked sixth overall on the Club’s all-time games record list (Fitzroy and Bears included) behind only Kevin Murray (333 games), Marcus Ashcroft (318 games), Simon Black (314* games), Alastair Lynch (306 games), and Michael Voss (289 games.

Power, whose role with the Giants in 2012 included part-time coaching duties, said he now looks forward to focussing more energy into furthering his off-field development.

“A year ago when I retired from the Brisbane Lions I probably wasn’t equipped to go in to a role in coaching or in football. Under the tutelage of a lot of people this year I’ve learned a lot about the game, a lot about myself and about teaching young players. I’m looking forward to getting in to the next stage of my life," Power said.

"I think it’s the right time. I was pretty happy with what (the Giants) were able to achieve this year and the best thing for me is what is best for the group going forward."

"To get to 300 games was fantastic. It’s an amazing milestone and I think it shows my longevity in the game and professionalism in being able to get up for a large number of games. That’s probably something that I’m most proud of."

"I’m really proud of the past but I’meven more excited about the future."

The entire Brisbane Lions AFC congratulates one of it's true greats on an outstanding playing career, and wishes him well on the next stage of his professional development.
