BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss said he would continue to seek clarification from umpires boss Jeff Gieschen on the treatment of superstars Jonathan Brown and Simon Black.

Brown won three free kicks from the close checking Matthew Warnock in Saturday's narrow win over Gold Coast, but over the course of the season has not been so lucky.

The Lions' skipper has won 19 free kicks in 14 matches, well behind fellow power forwards Nick Riewoldt (33), Drew Petrie (29) and Lance Franklin (28).

The numbers are even more alarming for Brownlow medallist Black, who has won just 13 free kicks from 12 matches.

It's a remarkably low number for an in-and-under midfielder who is tagged more weeks than not.

Brown (47th) and Jack Redden (15th with 26) are the only Lions inside the top 100 players for free kicks won.

Voss said he was in frequent communication with Gieschen to clarify the boundaries surrounding his key players.

"Some contests we need to be able to focus on and get clarification around … Browny and whatever tactics are being used against him and some of our ball players, in particular Richy (Daniel Rich) and Blacky," Voss said.

"That's going to be continual dialogue, I guess.

"That's the benefit of talking to Jeff regularly. They (umpires) treat each contest on its merits. All we'd like to do is take it on the word of that, but get clarification so that when Browny's out there he's getting clarification from the umpires about what can and can't be done.

"We'll continue to make sure we keep open dialogue so that we're clear and that I can communicate back to the players what's happening there."

Voss said regardless of umpiring decisions, he did not want players to take things into their own hands.

He cited Simon Black's retaliatory elbow on Bulldogs' tagger Liam Picken in round 12 as a prime example of what should not be done.

Black was reprimanded and survived missing a match due to an early guilty plea.

The Lions are preparing to take on West Coast on Sunday and are expecting midfielder Tom Rockliff to be available despite suffering a compound dislocation of his middle finger against the Suns.

Voss said the Lions would not be able to sneak under the Eagles' guard after defeating the then ladder leaders in round 10 at the Gabba.

"It presents a fantastic challenge for our players," he said.

"Playing in Perth, they'll want to get back on the winners' list, we know what they're capable of and the scoring power they have.

"Our players understand the task that's in front of them. Other than the weekend we've been in fairly consistent form so if we are still able to execute that no matter where it is, we'll be in the hunt and that's all you ask."
