MICHAEL Voss says it's all about "us" during the NAB Cup, but expects the Brisbane Lions to find something extra when playing Gold Coast on Saturday night.

In a glimpse of the highly competitive streak that made Voss a champion during his playing days, the Lions' coach said both teams would look for any advantage they could heading into the season proper.

Voss said although it was just a pre-season match, it would have a little edge to it.

"It's (rivalry) only 12 months old, but it feels like it's been going around for ages doesn't it?" Voss said.

"Everyone's looking for that little one to make sure you're coming into the season on the right path when it comes to that rivalry.

"The players are no different. Thankfully with these ones you don't have to build them up too much, you certainly don't have to talk about them, there's just this thing that exists in the belly and I'm sure both teams will be going at it in that third game, it'll be interesting."

Voss said he hadn't spoken about either Gold Coast or Melbourne - Saturday night's other opponent - in the build-up and was more concerned with his own team.

He said like most teams in the NAB Cup, the Lions would be trying to unearth some youngsters, as well as maintaining intensity over four quarters, which was a major problem in 2011.

"We've got a lot of things we need to get done in our own backyard first, so for us that's where the majority of our focus lies," he said.

"For us at the moment it's about us, and we're going to continue to make it about us for the next month."

Voss said the return of Mitch Clark to play his first match against the Lions following his switch to Melbourne would add extra spice to that contest, but denied his players would go looking for the key forward.

"I don't think you really know what it means for the players until they get out there and see how it goes," he said.

"If it means something to them, then that's good, but you've still got to channel your energy into the contest and not one person.

"Whenever you get an overspill of emotion you're not in the right headspace, so we certainly don't encourage it and won't encourage it because if there is an attack on anybody we want it on the ball, we don’t want it on the player."
