Retzlaff spurred on by competition
Bryce Retzlaff is among a handful of promising tall forwards vying for a spot in the Lions' senior team.
Captain Jonathan Brown is fit and ready to resume his role as the lynchpin of the Lions’ attack, which means there are probably only two spots remaining in the best 22 for additional ‘tall’ forwards.
Among those vying for a more regular senior berth in 2012 is 20 year-old Bryce Retzlaff, who played 11 matches and booted six goals in his second AFL season last year.
But Retzlaff will be competing against the likes of Aaron Cornelius, Jordan Lisle, Patrick Karnezis, Ryan Lester, and potentially even a resting ruckman, for one of those remaining positions.
It’s a handy problem for the Lions to have, with the outcome most likely to be determined during the NAB Cup pre-season matches which commence later this month.
Chatting live with fans on lions.com.au on Wednesday, Retzlaff said the forward line structure was still yet to be finalised.
“Hopefully (I can play at) centre half-forward - by Browny might have something to say about that,” Retzlaff joked.
“He is looking fit and training really well, so I won’t be pushing him out of his spot.”
“I think Browny will work in with the other talls in the forward line. He likes to run his opponent around, so it will be hard to keep him in the goal square.”
In response to another question, Retzlaff said that the competition between his team-mates was healthy, but could prove stressful at times.
“I'm a bit of a stress head, so (the competition for spots) has been stressing me out.”
“But it is definitely pushing us all to get the best out of ourselves, because we all want to be in the Round One team.”
