Of all the Brisbane Lions’ achievements in 2012, the highlight for Michael Voss was his players' follow-through on a late-season promise to each other.

Voss, speaking exclusively with LionsTV, said after making inroads in other areas of the game, the playing group got together to decide how they wanted to finish the year.

“It would have been a waste to give away the season,” Voss said.

“So they locked themselves in and made two commitments - for the Reserves to win the Grand Final, and for us to be able to finish with ten wins.”

By Round 21, the Lions were three games shy of their target - with only three games remaining.

While the Lions were the favourites heading into the final two games against Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs, they had to face premiership contenders Adelaide first.

It was a victory that few would have predicted - particularly at quarter time, when the scoreline read 38 points in the Crows’ favour.

“(Adelaide) is a side that has proven to be able to dismantle the best in the competition, so to (win) from that far back was definitely the best win of the season and reward for persistence,” Voss said.

“I also thought Port Adelaide was a pleasing game in the last quarter where we had Rich, Beams, Zorko, Green, Patfull - when the game was on the line, they stood up.”

The Adelaide and Port games secured wins number 8 and 9, and the Lions went on to seal the deal with a resounding 67-point victory over the Western Bulldogs in Round 23.

The icing on the cake came just weeks later, where, as promised, the Reserves became the NEAFL Northern Conference Premiers and the NEAFL Cross Conference Premiers.

“As far as I’m concerned, delivering on that promise was the most pleasing thing I got out of the season,” Voss said.

“We’ve slowly gone about our business, being able to roll out these young players. And we maybe surprised a few - but not ourselves.”
