Lions superstar Simon Black has been a regular feature on Brownlow Medal night throughout his illustrious 14-year career.

The 32 year-old won the AFL’s highest individual honour in 2002 and has finished Runner Up twice - in 2007 and 2008.

In fact, the name ‘Simon Black’ has been called 70 times throughout his 296 senior AFL matches, producing a total of 164 votes.

It ranks him second overall in the Club’s combined history, behind Fitzroy’s Kevin Murray (178 votes), and 10th overall in AFL/VFL history.

He is already in absolute elite company, but is not done yet.

Black has polled Brownlow Medal votes in every season since 1999 and can expect to receive at least a handful more at next Monday night’s count in Melbourne.

He sits just one vote behind North Melbourne champion Keith Greig (165 votes), and is just 15 votes shy of overtaking Lions Legend ‘Bulldog’ Murray as the Club’s highest ever polling player.

While 15 votes might prove difficult to achieve this year in a Lions side that won just four matches, Black is a proven vote-winner and still has time on his side should he not reach that total in 2011.

But Carlton Captain and previous two-time winner Chris Judd, who currently occupies 11th position overall with 162 votes, will likely rocket past Black as he heads into the 2011 Brownlow Medal count as the raging hot favourite.

Meanwhile Lions Captain Jonathan Brown has polled the sixth most Brownlow votes in Club history (103 votes) and has been one of only few key position players to attract the umpires’ attention throughout his career.

2011 Lions Club Champion Tom Rockliff and third placed Jack Redden - who each present part of an exciting future for the Club - are among a long list of Lions players who are yet to open their Brownlow Medal vote tally.

In fact, only 12 listed Lions players from 2011 had previously had their names read out on the night.
