BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has called for more of his players to take on goalkicking roles in the wake of his side's 43-point win over Essendon.

The Lions had eight different goal kickers at the Gabba on Saturday night, with experienced midfielder Luke Power contributing three majors.

Voss revealed it was part of his game plan to use Power in attack to take pressure off Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw.

"We needed more goalkicking potency out of Luke, perhaps to spend not so much time up the field and a little bit more time forward," Voss said.

"Luke’s got to play another role for us, which he’s taken on. He’s been fantastic in the way he’s been able to take on different roles we’ve given him."

The Lions had more disposals (377 to 358) and more marks (111 to 85) than Essendon.

And even though the Bombers had more inside 50s (52 to 47), the Lions proved far more efficient through Brown (five goals) and Bradshaw (four).

"The big statistic that I think ultimately might have been the difference was just our percentage of scores inside 50 comparatively to theirs," Voss said.

"We were very efficient going inside 50 which we haven’t been for most of the year. We’ve been working on that for a few weeks and to see that result was very, very pleasing."

Voss praised the efforts of second-year player James Polkinghorne and debutant Sam Sheldon, vowing to give them more game time to develop into potential forwards.

He also complimented ruckman Mitch Clark (26 hit-outs) on the energy he brought to the stoppages.

But it was captain Brown who laid the platform for the victory with his relentless running and work in front of goal.

"He’s looked like he was going to have a game like that for a while," Voss said.

"He’s been threatening to have that sort of game and his finishing was just exceptional."

Voss said the team has spoken at length about last week’s 93 point drubbing from Geelong and had learned a lot about how a champion side works together.

"We ran out the game pretty well I thought and we had constant pressure at the contest," Voss said.

"We just needed a bit more honest effort from more players and we were able to get that tonight."
