BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has criticised the video review system, calling it "clunky" and saying it "didn't feel right" after a referred decision cost his team a goal in Saturday night's NAB Cup loss to Melbourne.

Patrick Karnezis appeared to have soccered the ball through for a goal during the second half of the Lions' three-point loss before the decision was referred upstairs.

After a number of replays from different angles, the ball was deemed to have grazed the inside of the post, and a behind was given.

A goal would have pushed the Lions' lead beyond one straight kick in the low-scoring contest, which Melbourne went on to win 2.1 (13) to 1.4 (10).

Voss said the system, being trialled during the NAB Cup, took too long.

"Regardless of what happened - you could debate whether it was a behind or not - just our game stopping, I don't like that," Voss said.

"It just didn't feel right, there's something clunky about it. Anyway, I'm sure the powers-that-be will work that out.

"I couldn't say whether it was the right result or not. Forget the result, forget it was a point or a goal, just waiting just didn't feel right, felt like it wasn't supposed to happen."

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld was understandably happier with the process.

He joked and said it was fantastic, but went on to say as long as the correct decision was made in the end, he was happy with it.

"I think it's going to end up like the cricket; you win some, you lose some," Neeld said.

"If that was the correct decision, then it's a good thing. I didn't actually see the replay, I was getting excited about something else.

"I can't say whether or not it was correct, but if it meant an incorrect decision was overturned, I'm happy with that."

Neeld said with the video review option in place, the umpires simply had to use it.

"If the umpire is not certain and he has that facility to use and he chooses not to, we'd be sitting here asking ‘why is it there?’ So he wasn't certain, he used the facility, they weren't certain, so they went with the lesser result."

Gold Coast did not have a video review decision in either of its matches on Saturday.
