They already have a Lion, an Eagle and a Cat in the fold, but the Selwood family has gotten even bigger of late with the addition of a very special Seeing Eye Dog aptly named Selwood.

Vodafone Brisbane Lions midfielder Troy Selwood was recently named as an AFL celebrity ambassador for Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (SEDA) together with his brothers Adam, Joel and Scott and his parents Maree and Bryce.

Troy, who met his namesake for the first time prior to the Lions’ match against Geelong in Victoria, reunited with the 11-week old Labrador on Wednesday at the Gabba donning the beloved Fitzroy Guernsey that will be worn by the team for this weekend's Heritage Round match against the Eagles.

The puppy, who was paying his first ever visit to Brisbane, spent some quality time with Troy to show off some of his new tricks.

“I’m amazed at how far advanced he is for such a young pup,” Troy said.

Selwood the pup has been sharing his achievements with Troy through regular letters and photos and will keep the Selwood family informed of his progress as he learns to become a Seeing Eye Dog.

While Troy and his brothers are working hard with their respective football clubs, the newest member of the Selwood clan will be hard at work with his own training regime to become a working Seeing Eye Dog.

After countless months of extensive training programs and thousands of dollars investment, Selwood will one day become the eyes for a new vision impaired owner.

“It is a really great cause and I speak on behalf of my whole family when I say that we are really proud to be a part of the process,” Troy said.

“The competition’s pretty fierce while we’re on the field so it’s great to have something we can all agree to on off the field,” he said. “It’s just good for the family to be unified behind something we all believe in.”

“It also doesn’t matter that we are based in Brisbane, Perth, Geelong and Bendigo because Seeing Eye Dogs is a national charity and we can all support the organisation at a local level.”

SEDA is Australia’s only national organisation focusing on the breeding, training and provision of canine dogs to Australians with vision impairment. SEDA doesn’t receive a cent of government funding and relies on the support of the community for all operations.
