Ooh Aah Ash McGrath
Ash McGrath's popular question and answer column is back in 2008.
Ash: Yeah, I knew I had a good start to last year, until I got hurt leading up to the bye weekend. I was a bit slow in the first few weeks after coming back, but hopefully things will go my way this year.
Hiya Ash. I seem to remember you playing in the midfield a bit at times last year. Could we see you playing on the ball more this year or do you prefer your forward pocket role? – Samantha from Bellbowrie
Ash: This question probably relates a bit to the last one. I had a 5-6 minute run in the midfield on a couple of occasions late in the season and enjoyed it. It gave me a bit more confidence that I can play alongside the best of the boys. It gives me another string to the bow. I’ve just got to get my fitness up to that level.
G’day Ashley. Just wondered what you did for your holiday break at the end of last season, and if it’s a big stress relief for you like it is for me from my job? – Simon from Kangaroo Point
Ash: I just went straight back to Perth and hung out with my old man. As you probably know, he’s been pretty crook so I pretty much looked after him for seven weeks.
Hi Ash. Someone told me that you were a bit of a gridiron fan on one of your player trips to the US. I love the NFL – go the Patriots – and wondered if you think AFL players could get a gig in the Pros as receivers, not just as kickers? – Bruce from Bribie Island
Ash: If an NFL club came to me and asked me to try out as a wide receiver or running back, I’d think about packing my bags. I think it could be done because I reckon AFL players have better hand-eye coordination than the NFL boys. Me and Browny are always chatting about the NFL. We used to have some pretty fiery games when we were playing ‘Madden’ – you know how Browny hates to lose. There were a few controllers broken back when I was sharing a place with him. The Super Bowl is happening on Monday and I’ll be going for the favourites, the New England Patriots. I’m a bit of a Tom Brady and Randy Moss fan. I’m looking around for a new team at the moment because the main man from ‘my’ team is sitting in jail at the moment! (Michael Vick from the Atlanta Falcons).
G’day Ash. Can you tell us exactly what you’ve done to your knee? I read in the paper you’ve had a minor op. Hope you’re back real soon. – Lachy from St Kilda
Ash: Yeah mate, I just had a bit of a clean up. I did it last year in the Collingwood game and thought it would come right after our holiday break, but the running load got it sore again. The way I’m feeling now it’s not going to be a problem any more. Hopefully I’ll be ready to play in a month’s time.
