Staker to miss 2012
Brisbane Lions utility Brent Staker has successfully undergone the first phase of surgery on his injured right knee.
Staker, 27, had the surgery last week, with a further operation required later in the off-season to fully stabilise his knee.
He will miss the entire 2012 AFL Season as a result of the injury and its rehabilitation timeline, however, will make full recovery for the start of 2013.
The injury, sustained in the Lions’ narrow Round 23 loss to West Coast at the Gabba, was Staker’s second major knee injury this year.
“Missing another season is shattering after spending so much time on the sidelines this year,” Staker said.
“But it’s a challenge, and I’ll take on that challenge and do everything I can to get myself ready for when I can return in 2013 - that’s what I’m focusing on now.”
General Manager, Football Operations Dean Warren said that while it was a blow to lose Staker for another season, the focus was now on his rehabilitation.
“It’s very disappointing news for Brent - he has been outstanding throughout his rehab process this year and the manner in which he’s dealt with it has been exemplary,” Warren said.
“When fit, he’s a very solid and versatile contributor for this Club, so we will absolutely miss him on the field.”
“However, I’ve got no doubt that his positive attitude will see him through his rehabilitation, and we’ll see him back ready to go in 2013.”
