Brisbane Lions Assistant Coach Shane Woewodin is one of three individuals currently involved with the Club to have won the coveted Brownlow Medal - along with Senior Coach Michael Voss and veteran midfielder Simon Black.

But while Voss and Black’s honours both came in Club colours, Woewodin’s crowning achievement was with Melbourne back in 2000.

On that occasion, he polled 24 votes to finish clear of Western Bulldogs midfielder Scott West (22 votes) and Adelaide champion Andrew McLeod (20 votes).

It proved a career highlight for Woewodin - who never experienced an AFL Premiership despite playing in two Grand Finals.

For the likes of Woewodin, Voss and Black, Brownlow Medal night presents a rare opportunity to enjoy being part of one of the game’s most exclusive groups.

“It is one of the greatest nights on the AFL calendar,” Woewodin told lions.com.au.

“As a past winner, you have the opportunity to catch up with all the other past winners for about one hour before the start of the night.”

“They are truly great times, and I still get excited and overwhelmed when it comes to catching up with so many fantastic players.”

As for this year’s count, Woewodin is predicting Collingwood’s Dayne Beams - the older brother of Lion Claye - to snare the award.

“There are a lot of favourite out there - but I’m really looking at Dayne Beams as an outside chance,” Woewodin said.

“He’s been very consistent and kicks goals. The umpires seem to notice that, so he’s my roughy.”

The 2012 Brownlow Medal will be broadcast LIVE from 7:30pm on Monday 24 Septmber.
