A frustrating debut season dogged with injury seems long behind classy Lions youngster Jared Polec, who looks to have found his feet at the senior AFL level.

Polec, who managed just three senior matches in his first season with the Brisbane Lions last year, has already featured prominently in each of the team’s first four matches of the 2012 season.

During a live online chat with Lions fans on Tuesday, the 19 year-old South Australian admitted that he approached 2012 with some caution having undergone knee surgery late last year.

“I’ve had some (doubts) throughout the start of the season and during the NAB Cup,” Polec told Lions fans.

“But I’m starting to grow more confidence in my knee. That’s my key goal for the year, try and hold my spot and keep building confidence.”

While Polec’s silky skills and ability to run and carry the ball are among his greatest strengths, he looks to have also developed a harder edge to his game over summer.

“Hard ball get and the winning the contested ball - it’s something that we have been working on for a while now (as a team),” he said.

Polec will face possibly the greatest challenge of his young career this Saturday night when the Lions face reigning Premiers Geelong at the Gabba.

But it’s one that he is approaching head-on.

“It should be a good to play against the best opponents over the last five years. It will show where our team is at, and individually where I am at,” Polec said.
