Lions Assistant Coach Mark Harvey has said that the key to stopping Carlton this weekend is simple - the Lions midfield must step up.

Speaking exclusively to Lions TV, Harvey said that stoppages, and particularly fixing structural flaws of the past few weeks, were a focal point for the team heading into the match against the Blues.

In their last meeting with Carlton in Round 2 this year, the Lions allowed the visitors nine goals from stoppages, including four from their forward 50 - and Harvey has called on the midfielders to be more accountable.

“We gave them (Carlton) a lot of space where they wanted space,” Harvey said on this week’s Vero Coaches’ Wrap.

“We need to make sure that their midfield are a lot more pressured if they do go inside their forward 50.”

“Purely at the moment our midfield is not sustaining things enough - so there are a few adjustments we need to make structurally.”

After a strong start to the season, Carlton suffered four consecutive mid-season losses to Port Adelaide, Geelong, West Coast and Hawthorn.

They have since steadied the ship to a 9-9 record, and despite being without skipper Chris Judd this weekend, Harvey said that there was no doubt that the Blues were still a formidable opponent.

“Obviously there’s no Judd in the team this week, which is a plus for us, [but] Waite’s come back into the side too, so he’s another one of their key forwards that we’re going to have to contain,” he said.

“Watching them on the weekend, there’s some areas that we can hopefully exploit.”

“But, as we know, Carlton has been a potential top four team - even though they’re not there at the moment - so were going to have to play at our best to beat them.”
