Assistant Coach Gary O’Donnell says the team will be focusing on the right training in preparation for this week’s assignment against Port Adelaide.

Speaking exclusively to LionsTV on the Vero Coaches’ Wrap, O’Donnell said that the training schedule leading into the Adelaide game seemed to work well for the team.

The Club’s training schedule typically consists of a light skills session on Tuesday, a main training session on Wednesday and a light final session on Friday (as well as individual strength and conditioning training throughout the week).

O’Donnell said that looking towards the game against Port, his team would be looking to replicate what they did against the Crows on the training track.

“We had a very good week last week on the training track - our Tuesday low-intensity skills day was divided into areas of the ground, and at the main training session on the Wednesday, we did similar things but at a higher intensity,” O’Donnell said.

“It seemed to work for us - we got better ball movement and cohesion between our three groups (forwards, midfield, defence).”

“That’s the key to this week: for us to have another good training week, and to then go down and train at AAMI Stadium on Friday and then give a good account of ourselves away.”

Despite entering the game as favourites, O’Donnell said that the Lions must focus on starting strong - particularly as the away team.

“We can’t afford to do what we did (against Adelaide) in a foreign venue because you don’t get the chance always to peg them back.”

The Lions will face Port Adelaide this Saturday at 1.40pm at AAMI Stadium.
