Former Club great Martin Pike certainly knows a thing or two about achieving the ultimate team success.

After a couple of lean early years with both Melbourne and Fitzroy, Pike went on to play in four Premiership-winning sides (from six Grand Final appearances) throughout his illustrious 247-game AFL career.

His first taste of Premiership glory came with North Melbourne in 1999, before a move to Brisbane in 2001 saw him famously become a key part of the Lions’ three consecutive flags.

Speaking on the eve of this Saturday night’s inaugural Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame event in Melbourne, Pike said that Premiership success could be an important factor in determining potential inductees.

“Putting in blokes that have won Premierships will never devalue what the Hall of Fame is about,” Pike told lions.com.au.

“After all, it’s a team game and Premierships are what you play for. Even guys who had long and successful careers, but didn’t get that team success, always seem to talk about missing out on winning a Premiership.”

“I often look at the AFL Hall of Fame and wonder what the actual criteria are. A lot of it is obviously based on individual awards, but I look at someone like Bob Johnson - who was inducted only last week - and am blown away by his record.”

“In eight seasons at Melbourne, he played in seven Grand Finals for six wins, before going over to WA,” he said.

Pike himself has an enviable list of both team and individual achievements - including final Fitzroy’s final Best and Fairest award in 1996 - and will no doubt be one of many worthy candidates considered for a place in the Club’s most exclusive group.

But the popular Club figure is simply looking forward to reuniting with some of his former team-mates - both from Fitzroy and the Brisbane Lions - this Saturday night at Crown Palladium.

“It’s going to be fantastic,” Pike said.

“The AFL obviously isn’t quite the same as local suburban football where you can get along and see the same familiar faces each week. So having nights like this are a good opportunity to catch up with people you haven’t seen for a long time.”

“Whether you’ve played two games or 200 games - it’s still your football Club.”
