Rhys Mathieson has been selected to take on North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium tomorrow in his first AFL game of the season.

The rugged midfielder comes into the side for his 47th senior game after a string of superb performances against AFL opposition in the reserves scratch matches.

The 23-year-old played nine senior games last year and was also a key contributor in the Lions unbeaten NEAFL premiership season.

He replaces first year Lion Cam Ellis-Yolmen who has been omitted.

Veteran Ryan Lester also returns after missing three matches due to a hamstring injury he suffered against Melbourne in round eight.

He replaces Daniel Rich who is serving a one match ban for a dangerous tackle.

They are the only two changes to the side that comfortably beat the Bulldogs by 24 points at the Gabba in round 11.
