Zorko said he immediately thought of his young son Louis when the announcement was made that he Gabba would host the premiership decider on October 24 and how it would inspire kids his age to play AFL.
The born and bred Queenslander grew up a footy mad kid surrounded by rugby league fans and says his dream for his son was that the numbers would swell throughout his schooling years.
“When I was a kid coming up at school I would have been one of maybe four in the entire school that played AFL or even followed AFL,’’ he said.
“Now the fact the city of Brisbane will get the Grand Final, I think there is a real opportunity to grow the game significantly.
“My little fella’s going to hit school next year and I’m hoping by the time he finishes school he’s not the only one playing AFL and there’s a couple of hundred doing it.’’
Lions chairman Andrew Wellington who was on the Queensland Government committee that presented the successful bid to the AFL said the push to bring the game to the Sunshine State was driven by a desire to further grow the game at the grass roots level.
“It is a win-win, it is a win for the AFL and a win for Queensland,’’ he said.
“The long term impacts on the game here will be significant.
