With reigning champion and Club record holder Orla O’Dwyer yet to return from Ireland all eyes were on whether second year player Rheanne Lugg would claim the title.
Service woman Lugg has spent long periods on deployment this year and had struggled to find opportunities for consistent training but was still able to produce a stellar time to cross the line first on the QE11 track.
Nat Grider was one of the big improvers shaving 15 seconds off her personal best to finish second.
Last year’s third place getter Cathy Svarc had to settle for fourth after being upstaged by younger sister, 2020 draftee Ruby Svarc.
“They are both such great athletes and it nice for us to have that littler bit of sisterly rivalry pushing them even harder,’’ said Women’s Physical Performance Manager Matt Green.
Sophie Conway took two seconds off her PB to round out the top five.
However some of the biggest improvements came in the middle of the pack.
Kate Lutkins, Greta Bodey, Belle Dawes, Jordan Zanchetta, Emma Zielke and Dakota Davidson all recorded their best times.
Dawes, who was a whopping 77 seconds quicker and Bodey (22 secs) were the standouts.
Green said the high number of personal bests was a sign of the continued development of the young side.
“Belle Dawes shaved a mile off her time which is a testament to her and Greta and Natt have shown great improvement and are making big headways with their physical development,’’ he said.
Green said the quality of the work the players had done back for the Clubs in the QWAFL had been evident with the way they presented for the time trials.
The group have definitely improved across the board this year,’’ he said.
“They are all ready to go having had a year under their belt of QAFLW footy, it is nice that they have all hit the ground running.’’
