When Dayne Zorko was grilled by TV commentators prior to the round seven clash with GWS at Giants Stadium, you just knew he was going to have a big day.
Zorko was asked if reputations had been damaged by the previous week’s loss to Geelong at the Sydney Cricket Ground and he didn’t like it.
The skipper came through the school of hard knocks during some tough years at Brisbane and no player has done more to get the Club where they are now.
At 31-years-of-age Zorko is no longer the prime mover at the Lions, having adjusted his role over the past two seasons to help coach Chris Fagan blood the next generation midfielders.
His selfless act has led to different numbers from his 2018 All Australian season but his value to the side hasn’t diminished.
The coaches saw it as the perfect captain’s game against the Giants as they awarded him top votes in Club champion voting.
His 18 possession, one goal game was not his best statistical output for the season, but the way he put the Giants on notice from the opening bounce was inspirational.
That’s not to say he no longer racks up some big numbers. He had a big day out against arch rivals the Gold Coast in the Q Clash collecting 25 possession and booting two goals.
He also gathered 24 possessions against the Western Bulldogs in a game where he also laid nine tackles and won nine clearances.
