Fans claim first digibattle
Lions fans won their first ever 'digibattle' against the West Coast Eagles on Sunday
The digibattle pitted fans from both clubs against each other to determine who showed the greatest amount of digital support during the Round 10 clash at the Gabba.
Much like the actual game itself, the Lions fans probably went into the battle as rank underdogs, but came out with a narrow 3-2 victory!
Sports Geek - the same people behind ‘Digital Pride’, the Lions’ new social media ranking system - administered the online competition which was fought over Facebook and Twitter and measured by Sports DP technologies.
Scoring was based around FIVE areas of social media support, including; building a digital cheer squad (through Digital Pride), interacting with their respective clubs’ pre-game Facebook posts, supporting their respective mascots on Facebook, using their club’s official hashtag on Twitter posts, and re-tweeting club posts.
It’s important to note that figures were based on percentages to ensure that the battle was played on the fairest of terms.
The West Coast Eagles, who have been pushing their social media platform for a little longer than the Lions, have far superior online support on Facebook (119,826 fans) and Twitter (15,557 followers) compared to the Lions (50,961 Facebook fans and 8,744 Twitter followers).
But with the adjusted figures, the Lions proved to have the greatest percentage of support from their digital fans.
The results were as follows:
Build a Digital Cheer Squad
Users of the Lions’ Digital Pride experienced a 7.97% increase in points per fan, eclipsing users of the Eagles’ ‘The Swoop’ whose increased was 4.58%
Lions 1 - Eagles 0
Game day interaction on Facebook
Pre-game ‘likes’ to club Facebook posts saw a comprehensive win to the West Coast Eagles, who accumulated 3,612 ‘likes’. The Lions, meanwhile, had just 323 ‘likes’, which was adjusted to 924 for accuracy. Either way, it was a clear area of dominance by the Eagles fans.
Lions 1 - Eagles 1
Supporting mascots
Stats showed that 6.74% of ‘Digital Pride’ users ‘liked’ Bernie ‘Gabba’ Vegas’ Facebook page, but it wasn’t enough to topple Eagles mascot ‘Rick the Rock’ who had 9.06% of his fans’ support.
Lions 1 - Eagles 2
Hashtag warfare
465 Lions fans used the Club’s official hashtag ‘#golions’ throughout the match compared to the Eagles’ 588. However, the adjusted total showed that the Lions had a far greater percentage of fans using the hashtag (5.32%). The Eagles percentage figure was 3.78%.
Lions 2 - Eagles 2
Team Retweet
The deciding point came down to whichever ‘team’ re-tweeted their club posts the most (as a percentage), and it was the Lions who prevailed with 25% against the Eagles’ 19.82%.
Lions 3 - Eagles 2
