Brisbane Lions Head of Women’s Football Breeanna Brock commended today’s 2020 AFLW fixture announcement. 

In a real coup for Women’s football in Queensland the Lions will play nine regular season games, with five to be hosted at home by the Lions and an additional Away match against the Suns at Metricon Stadium, meaning Queenslanders will get to see more footy than ever before. 

Off the back of what was an interrupted season in 2020, Brock said the team was so excited about getting back to doing what they love.  

“Now that the 2021 draw is out, we’re really excited that we get to showcase so much women’s footy in Queensland,” Brock said.

“We really have the opportunity this year to go to the next level and the fans can be excited about being able to be a big part of it.” 

In another exciting step forward for the League, matches in 2021 will be ticketed for the first time, allowing for much-needed additional funding to make its way into the competition.  
 
Tickets to AFLW matches for Adults / Concession will be $10 with free entry for children under 18. 
 
Today’s fixture sees the Lions take on Richmond on the road in Round 1 before they return to their home ground at Hickey Park on Brisbane’s northside to face Geelong in Round 2. 

“It’s such a fantastic venue for our fans, it’s really accessible with plenty of parking options and close to public transport. There is a bit more shade and seating for the crowd and it has a really fantastic community atmosphere”  

The Lions will also face GWS, West Coast and the SUNS on the road however in a truly remarkable fixture for the Club they will play four more games at home against Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle at Hickey Park and a blockbuster match in Round 8 against Collingwood on a Saturday afternoon at the Gabba. 

“It really is a fixture for the fans and we’re just delighted about delivering it” Brock said. 

Senior Coach Craig Starcevich said he is happy with the stability of the team from last year and impressed with the work that the players have done over the winter QAFLW season and the first month of preseason.  

“We’ve been regular finalists in the first four years of the comp and this group is committed to continuing that trend” he said.  

“Fans should be excited about the quality and quantity of football they’ll get to witness this year.”
