When off-season recruits Dayne Beams, Allen Christensen, and Mitch Robinson commence pre-season training with the Brisbane Lions on Monday, they won’t be total strangers to their new Club.
Beams, in particular, will feel right at home in the Queensland sunshine alongside his brother Claye.
Through his close connection with his brother, the older Beams will also be quite familiar with a host of other Lions players.
Another familiar face for Beams will be former Collingwood teammate Jackson Paine, who was traded to the Lions 12 months earlier.
He will also get to work closely with former Collingwood teammate Ben Hudson, who returns to Queensland in 2015 to take on a ruck coaching role, while Backline Coach Mitch Hahn also spent time coaching at the Magpies.
Christensen is another who won’t be completely ‘new’ at the Hyundai Centre, despite being born and raised in Lara and spending the majority of his 23 years in the Geelong region.
Like Beams, Christensen will be greeted in Brisbane by one of his former teammates at Geelong in ruckman Trent West.
Coincidentally, West and Christensen were both part of the Cats’ premiership triumph in 2011.
“He’s offered me his house for a bit, so that was good of Westy. I’m looking forward to hopefully getting in the midfield with him again,” Christensen said upon first being traded to the Lions.
“It’s exciting knowing people up there. My little brother was really good mates with Darcy Gardiner and Lewy Taylor. So there are a few familiar faces up there.”
Christensen will also be just a stone’s throw away from his management company, Velocity Sports, who are also based in Brisbane.
Robinson, meanwhile, will be reunited with former Carlton CEO Greg Swann, who was appointed to the top job in Brisbane just a few months ago.
In addition, there will be a host of players of similar age that he will remember from his final years as a junior.
In fact, Robinson will become the fifth player at the Club to have been selected at the 2008 AFL National Draft – joining Daniel Rich, Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff, and Dayne Beams.
First-year players Liam Dawson, Harris Andrews, and Josh Clayton will also be relatively familiar with their surrounds – particularly Dawson and Andrews who have been part of the Lions Academy.
Clayton, meanwhile, has also already spent time training with the Club in Brisbane, and as a huge Lions fan growing up, should feel right at home.
And aside from these handy connections within the Club, there’s no doubt that all fans of the Club will be eager to welcome them to the Lions family.
While players with 1-4 years of AFL experience have already hit the track in preparation for 2015, the remaining squad will join them next Monday 17 November.
