Ely Smith’s push for a senior call up has been dealt a blow after he suffered an ankle injury in the Lions’ 66 point victory over Essendon in the VFL.
Lions High Performance Manager Damien Austin said the emerging wingman suffered a high ankle sprain when an opponent fell across his leg in the second quarter.
“Ely had a brilliant pre-season and got himself super fit and it’s unfortunate for him that he’s suffered this setback,’’ he said.
“He’ll be out for three weeks but we expect him to bounce back well.’’
Archie Smith also suffered an ankle injury and although he was able to play out the game, he is now set to miss next week.
Jarrod Berry will be given a chance to push for selection to take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Berry was subbed out of Saturday’s victory over Essendon and replaced by younger brother Tom after struggling to generate any power while running.
Scans on his adductor and hip flexor came back clear and Austin said he would be available for selection if he was able to prove his fitness later in the week.
