THE FREAKISHLY skilled Jared Brennan is preparing to tackle the twin summits of becoming a full time midfielder and a leader for his club the Brisbane Lions.

Brennan was in sparkling touch in Saturday night’s win over West Coast, racking up 31 touches and kicking the go-ahead goal at the start of the fourth quarter with a booming left foot from outside 50m.

But he wants more.

Now in his eighth year at the club, Brennan has always stunned crowds with his ability to do almost anything on a football field.

Over time he has added the consistency and now the 25-year-old wants to go to the next level.

“I’ve been dying to get into the midfield for the past two years, but we’ve had injuries to the ruckmen,’’ he said.

“I trained all pre-season in the midfield (last year) and then the ruckmen went down so I had to pinch hit in the ruck ... Hopefully this year, touch wood, our ruckmen don’t go down and I can play in the midfield.

“I think it frees you up a little bit and you’re in the action a bit more. When you’re in the forward line you’re floating in and out, (but) when you’re in the midfield you’re around the ball, so hopefully Vossy can keep me there.’’

Even when the Lions struggled to keep pace with the Eagles in the first half on Saturday night, Brennan was a standout for the hosts.

He not only won the ball but used it superbly and said he hoped the Lions could develop a larger midfield group to support tried and true performers like Simon Black.

“Michael Rischitelli had a good game tonight; Daniel Rich played a bit more backline, that's what the team needed.

"But if we can get four or five guys [through the midfield],  hopefully they can get the tags and I can split through the back.

Brennan now considers himself a senior operator in the Lions' outfit and just getting a game is no longer good enough.

“’I’ve been here seven or eight years now.  The longer you stay at a place the more you take ownership of it,” he said.

“When you come in the first couple of years you’re happy to get a game and that’s where the ownership comes through, when you’re in the 22 every week, the losses hurt and the wins feel really good.”
