The prestigious annual MVP award goes to the player adjudged to be the best performed across the 2021 AFL competition, nominated by the league’s players.
Zorko, McCluggage and Lyons, all members of the 40 man All Australian squad, have been in outstanding form throughout 2021 as they steered the Lions to a third consecutive top four finish at the end of the home and away season.
The captain has been at his high-octane best this season, harassing opponents with his pressure game and sparking the Lions offence where he currently sits fourth in the league for goal assists.
It is an area where McCluggage also excels. The classy wingman has underlined his status as the best kick inside 50m in the competition this year and sits at the top of the rankings for goal assists.
With Brownlow medallist and last year’s winner Lachie Neale missing for periods in the middle of the season, Lyons has been the mainstay of the Lions’ engine room.
He has taken the added responsibility in his stride to rank among the competition’s best for centre clearances, pressure acts and contested possession.
The nomination for the MVP Award is a two-stage process. The first involves players nominating three teammates for the award, before three nominees from every club are presented to the wider playing group for a vote to decide the winner.
Players cannot vote for their own teammates in stage two of the process.
Other nominees for the club include Marcus Adams for Most Courageous and Harry Sharp for Best First Year.
