Zac Goes Bang

Zac Bailey got to live out every young footballer’s dream back in Round 3, with a memorable goal after the siren that Lions fans won’t forget anytime soon.

With the Lions trailing by five points and the clock winding down, Bailey took a critical mark 50m from goal.

Moving in as the siren sounded, the young midfielder flushed the kick straight between the posts to get the Lions over the line to a 1-point victory over Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.

Sir Doug Nicholls Round To Remember

It was a Sir Doug Nicholls Round to remember in 2021, with Indigenous Lions players starring on and off the ground.

In a memorable moment following a powerful welcome to country ceremony, Charlie Cameron, Keidean Coleman and Cal Ah Chee danced out onto the ground ahead of their inspired teammates, before going on to star in a thrilling team-first performance against GWS.

Cameron and Coleman both played pivotal roles in a number of scoring chains, while Mitch Robinson had an absolute ball on the park with five goals across the afternoon to see the Lions secure a 64-point victory.

AFLW Prelim at the Gabba

There’s few things better in life than a roaring Gabba fortress and Lions’ fans certainly came out in force to cheer our AFLW side on in a thrilling Preliminary Final win over Collingwood.

In the second ever AFLW match at the home of Queensland football, the Lions’ put on a physical contest from start to finish for a jubilant home crowd.

The Lions held on until the dying moments of the game to outlast Collingwood by four points and book a spot in their third AFLW Grand Final in five years.

The Joe Show

All eyes were on the Lions' prize recruit, Joe Daniher in 2021 and boy, did he live up to the hype.

All year long Lions fans were treated to a special screening of the Joe Show, with Daniher rarely missing a beat.

Starting the season in the side, Daniher stayed there all year to put together one of his best performances since 2017. Most notably, it was his ability to kick a goal in every match of the home and away season that had Lions fans roaring the loudest; the first time that feat had been achieved since Daniher did it for the Bombers back in 2017.

If 2021 is anything to go by, Lions fans could be in store for a second season of the Joe Show in 2022.

The 31-Year Old Debutant

Veteran defender Daniel Rich showed Lions fans that there’s plenty more left in the tank, after a standout 2021 saw him rewarded with his first All Australian blazer.

The 31-year old made the half back flank position in the All Star side his own with a stunning 13th AFL season that saw him collect a career high 624 disposals and becoming the fifth highest single season possession earner in Lions’ history and one of only 10 players to ever pass the 600 mark.

Courtney Hodder’s Goal of the Year

Courtney Hodder certainly made a name for herself in her debut AFLW season, with her antics in front of goal becoming a familiar sight to Lions fans across the 2021 NAB AFLW season.

So it was with little surprise to many that the excitement machine took out the 2021 Goal of the Year with her long-range stunner in Round 9 against Melbourne.

In a two on one contest near the 50m arc, Hodder, without breaking a stride, flicked the ball in the air, gathered in cleanly, steadied herself and sent it sailing through the goals from 40m out.

Double Chance Drama

There was no drama spared when it came to the final match of the Lions’ home and away season against West Coast.

Desperate to lock in a top four finish, the Lions took until the final 30 seconds to leapfrog the Western Bulldogs on the ladder and nail down the double finals chance in front of a passionate home crowd.

With the clock running down, a Lincoln McCarthy left footed snap for a behind was all that was needed for the Lions secure the top four position with moments to spare.

A Charlie Cameron goal after the siren completed the 38-point win, with the 21,000 strong crowd letting out an almighty roar.

2021 AFLW Premiership

It’s hard to go past winning an AFLW Premiership for our top moment of 2021.

It was a case of third time lucky for our Lions, who exacted revenge on Adelaide for the 2017 NAB AFLW Grand Final heartbreak with an 18-point triumph at Adelaide Oval.

Kate Lutkins was rewarded for a dominant performance in defence that saw her repeatedly cut off Crows’ forays in their forward 50 with the Best on Ground.

Premier tagger Cathy Svarc and lockdown defender kept key Crows’ forwards Ebony Marinoff and Erin Phillips unusually quiet, while Courtney Hodder slotted another unbelievable goal when she kicked the Lions’ second goal midway through the second quarter.
