It’s been a whirlwind few months for off-season recruit Phoebe Monahan, and the milestones just keep piling up.

The 28-year-old made her Club debut in Round 1, and this Saturday will notch up 25 AFLW career games when she pulls on the maroon, blue and gold against Geelong.

“It’s been a bit of a journey to get to 25 games,” Monahan said.

“From being with the Giants, and then Richmond, and now here with the Lions.

"I’m so grateful and happy to be where I am and that this is a milestone I’ll have with Brisbane.”

Monahan was first taken by the GWS Giants with Pick 39 in the 2017 draft, where she played 10 games before being signed by Richmond in the 2019 League expansion.

The Lions were quick to snap up the delisted Tigers star in the off-season, with the tough defender making the move to Queensland in late 2021.

From there, the reliable defender put in the hard work to earn her Club debut in Round 1 against the Adelaide Crows.

For Monahan, it was a moment that felt like she was playing her first AFLW game all over again.

“Debuting for the Club was really special,”

“I’ll always remember the feeling. It actually felt like I was a draftee having my first game.

“I was really grateful and proud to be able to run out there for the Club.

“I knew coming up here I was going to have to work hard to get a spot on this team, I was walking into a Premiership team full of amazing players and I knew I wouldn’t just walk in and play.

“So, it was really cool to put in all the hard work and be able to find form ahead of the season and earn that position in the team.”

Monahan has looked right at home in the Lions’ backline this season, fitting into Captain Bre Koenen’s defensive unit seamlessly.

“I just feel like I’m where I’m meant to be and that I’m happy in what I’m doing here.

“That’s the most important thing for me, personally, is that even in every training session, in pre-season, even when I didn’t feel like I was in form, I was still loving being here and learning and working hard.

“I think that this backline especially has been very easy to come into because they’ve got that communication and composure. They make it easy to work with one another and a good line to be a part of.”

Monahan will play her 25th AFLW career game on Saturday against Geelong.
